Frequently Asked Questions

Mesh count identifies the number of physical openings per linear inch of a screen or sieve. Microns, conversely, measure the precise linear distance between those wires, representing the actual size of the particles that can pass through the openings.

Because mesh count measures openings per linear inch, a higher mesh number means more openings are crammed into that inch. This forces the individual openings to become significantly smaller, which correlates to a finer micron rating.

Sieve and screen manufacturers use varying wire thicknesses depending on the required durability of the mesh. Because the thickness of the wire takes up space within that linear inch, two screens with the exact same mesh count can have slightly different micron openings if their wire diameters differ.
